Case Labeler SMED Upgrade
Reducing Case Labeler Changeover Times with SMED Principles
Improved case labeler efficiency by applying SMED principles, cutting changeover time and boosting line performance.
Project Background
Our client had recently installed a new end-of-line packaging solution featuring a Markham case labeler designed to apply labels on both sides of cases. However, frequent changeovers between different case sizes were creating inefficiencies. Operators had to spend time making fine X and Y adjustments, slowing production and increasing frustration.
Our Role & Key Activities
The Problem
While Markham case labelers are reliable, they aren’t designed for fast, repeatable adjustments between case sizes. As a result, operators faced:
Frequent manual intervention
Trial-and-error during setup
Extended changeover times and reduced throughput
The Solution
Engineering Support 24/7 was brought in to optimize efficiency using SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) principles. We designed and installed a custom adjustment arm that:
Used Rexnord plastic bushes and slide rails for smooth, repeatable movement
Included bearings for effortless in/out adjustments
Featured spring-loaded plungers with fixed locations to eliminate guesswork
This turned the lengthy fine-tuning process into a fast, repeatable adjustment.
The Outcoming
Changeovers reduced to near plug-and-play simplicity
Setup time cut significantly
Fewer stoppages and downtime
Easier, frustration-free operation for staff
Key Takeaways
Applying SMED methodology and practical mechanical redesign helped our client with following:
- Faster changeovers through SMED-driven design improvements
- Consistent labeling performance with reduced manual adjustments
- Improved operator experience and productivity
It demonstrates that how targeted engineering support can deliver measurable productivity gains.
