Restoring Filling Line Reliability: Chromex SP1001 Repair & Support
We had a call recently from a beverage manufacturer struggling with one of their bottling machines — a Chromex SP1001 semi-automatic liquid filler. It was causing production delays and putting customer delivery deadlines at serious risk.
They use the machine to fill 500ml bottles, roughly the size of a standard water bottle.
Problem Overview
The Chromex SP1001 kept losing its prime. It would draw product into the gear pump, run a handful of fills successfully, then if it sat idle for even a couple of minutes it would lose prime again. Operators were left constantly re-priming the machine — wasting time, wasting product, and slowing the whole line down.
Root Cause Analysis
Upon inspection, we traced the issue to a mechanical shaft seal failure on the gear pump. A small air leak through the seal was breaking the vacuum, causing the machine to lose suction and fail to maintain prime.
To keep production running, we made temporary adjustments to stabilize performance while a permanent solution was arranged.
Why This Happens On Semi Auto Filling Machines
This is a common failure point on semi-automatic liquid fillers generally.
Most of these machines rely on a gear pump or piston pump pulling a vacuum to draw product in. That vacuum only works if every seal in the system is doing its job. Let one mechanical shaft seal wear or glaze over, even slightly, and you get a tiny air ingress point — not enough to see, but enough to break the vacuum the moment the pump isn’t actively pumping.
That’s why the fault pattern emerges it will run a few fills fine but if it sits idle for a minute or two it will lose prime. If your operators are describing exactly that cycle on any semi-auto filler, start with the shaft seal before you start chasing anything more complicated
Parts Sourcing & Solution
Sourcing the correct parts was not straightforward. One apparent “manufacturer” turned out to be a reseller with no genuine OEM spares available. Fortunately, through our trusted MRO partner JMB Supplies, we were able to trace the original OEM and order the exact mechanical seal kit required.
Once the parts arrived, our team returned to install the replacement seal, recalibrate the pump, and restore full vacuum integrity — ensuring smooth and consistent filling performance.
Back Up and Running
Once the kit arrived we were straight back on site — fitted the new seal, recalibrated the pump, and got the vacuum holding properly again. No more losing prime, no more re-priming between fills. The customer’s bottling line has been running clean since.
Worth saying too — while we had the pump apart, we checked the rest of the wear parts while we were in there. No point buttoning a machine back up and leaving another seal ready to go a fortnight later. If you’re already elbow-deep in a pump for one fault, it costs you nothing extra to check the rest while you’re in there.
Spotting It Before It Becomes a Breakdown
If you’re running semi-auto fillers on your own line, this one’s easy to catch before it turns into a stoppage:
– **Listen for the pump losing suction** — a change in pitch or a slight hunting sound when it’s meant to be holding vacuum is often the first sign.
– **Watch the re-prime frequency** — if operators are quietly re-priming more often than they used to, that could be wear creeping in.
– **Check for product weeping at the seal housing** — even a trace is worth investigating before it gets worse.
Another thing that can help you detect an issue before it becomes a problem is tracking how long the prime lasts, daily or weekly depending on the machine, the idea is you want the data to help you make a good decision on the health of your filler and when it might need attention.
None of this needs specialist kit. It just needs someone walking the line who knows what normal sounds and looks lik
